Reasons You May Need to See a Podiatrist

If your feet hurt while walking, running, or even standing still for long periods of time, it may be an indication that you need the care of a podiatrist, which is a medical doctor who specializes in problems of the foot and ankle. Other foot problems that may need such attention include bunions, hammertoes, swollen feet and ankles, heel pain, corns or calluses that hurt when you walk, or itching and scaling skin on the feet or toes. Other indications that you may need to see a podiatrist include, pain in the ball of the foot, discoloration of the toes, feet that are cold and sweaty, foot pain while wearing shoes, and pain when walking barefoot. A podiatrist can also help with sports-related injuries and foot or ankle problems resulting from other health conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure or obesity. If you have arthritis or rheumatism, a podiatrist can help to address these issues before they cause more serious complications to your feet. Regular visits with a podiatrist may save you from many years of pain and discomfort.

If you are dealing with pain in your feet and ankles, you may want to seek help from a podiatrist. Feel free to contact one of our podiatrists from Advanced Foot & Ankle Medical Center . Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Symptoms and Causes of Achilles Tendonitis

If you hear a crackling sound when you move your ankle, experience stiffness or minor pain in the area above the heel, or feel heel pain when walking uphill or climbing stairs, you may have a condition known as Achilles tendonitis. Being overweight, lacking flexibility, and weakened calf muscles are thought to be contributing factors to this inflammation. Activities that call for sudden starts and stops, or abrupt changes in direction can also aggravate the tendon. If you have flat feet, you may be at further risk as well. Preventative measures include wearing proper footwear with adequate support, maintaining strong leg and calf muscles, and stretching especially prior to activity. If the pain continues, it is suggested that you seek the care of a podiatrist who can examine your heel and offer an appropriate treatment plan.

Achilles tendon injuries need immediate attention to avoid future complications. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists of Advanced Foot & Ankle Medical Center . Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is the Achilles Tendon?

The Achilles tendon is a tendon that connects the lower leg muscles and calf to the heel of the foot. It is the strongest tendon in the human body and is essential for making movement possible. Because this tendon is such an integral part of the body, any injuries to it can create immense difficulties and should immediately be presented to a doctor.

What Are the Symptoms of an Achilles Tendon Injury?

There are various types of injuries that can affect the Achilles tendon. The two most common injuries are Achilles tendinitis and ruptures of the tendon.

Achilles Tendinitis Symptoms

  • Inflammation
  • Dull to severe pain
  • Increased blood flow to the tendon
  • Thickening of the tendon

Rupture Symptoms

  • Extreme pain and swelling in the foot
  • Total immobility

Treatment and Prevention

Achilles tendon injuries are diagnosed by a thorough physical evaluation, which can include an MRI. Treatment involves rest, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery. However, various preventative measures can be taken to avoid these injuries, such as:

  • Thorough stretching of the tendon before and after exercise
  • Strengthening exercises like calf raises, squats, leg curls, leg extensions, leg raises, lunges, and leg presses

Exercising to Improve Foot Health

If you get tired from walking or standing for long periods, you may need to perform some simple exercises to strengthen the feet and legs. This exercise can help keep your ankles active and improve circulation as well. Begin by sitting in a straight-backed chair with both feet on the floor. Raise one leg so it’s parallel to the floor and rotate your ankle clockwise in a circular motion. Repeat this motion rotating your ankle counterclockwise. Then flex your toes straight out away from your body and then back towards yourself. Be sure to alternate each leg and foot. Next with your feet flat on the floor, raise your heels and hold for a few seconds, keeping your toes on the floor. You can also try this while pressing lightly on the knees to add a bit of resistance. Another great exercise is toe raises. Instead of lifting the heels, this time lift the toes and keep your heels on the floor. Making these simple exercises a part of your daily routine can strengthen the feet and ankles over time. If you have a foot or ankle condition, or any serious health issues, please be sure to check with a podiatrist before starting any new exercise programs.

Exercising your feet regularly with the proper foot wear is a great way to prevent injuries and build strength. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Advanced Foot & Ankle Medical Center . Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

For those of us fortunate enough to not have any foot problems, it is an important gesture to take care of them to ensure good health in the long run.

Some foot health exercises can include ankle pumps, tip-toeing, toe rises, lifting off the floor doing reps and sets, and flexing the toes. It is best to speak with Our doctors to determine an appropriate regimen for your needs. Everyone’s needs and bodies are different, and the activities required to maintain strength in the feet vary from individual to individual.

Once you get into a routine of doing regular exercise, you may notice a difference in your feet and how strong they may become.

Stress Fractures Occur in the Feet or Ankles

Stress fractures in bones are tiny cracks which occur over time. They are caused by frequent, repetitive force being applied to the bone. Athletes that participate in high impact sports – such as track and field, soccer, tennis, basketball, gymnastics, and cheerleading – can be at greater risk of developing a stress fracture in their feet and ankles. This is especially true if the intensity of the activity increases suddenly. Stress fractures can cause dull pain in a specific area that worsens with activity and gets better with rest. If you believe you may have a stress fracture in your feet or ankles, it is suggested that you stop the activity and make an appointment with a podiatrist. Along with a physical examination, the podiatrist may need to look at various imaging tests, including X-ray, ultrasound, bone scan, CT scan, or MRI, which is highly effective in detecting fracture lines. These will help in making a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

Stress fractures occur when there is a tiny crack within a bone. To learn more, contact one of our podiatrists from Advanced Foot & Ankle Medical Center . Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain free and on your feet.

How Are They Caused?

Stress fractures are the result of repetitive force being placed on the bone. Since the lower leg and feet often carry most of the body’s weight, stress fractures are likely to occur in these areas. If you rush into a new exercise, you are more likely to develop a stress fracture since you are starting too much, too soon.  Pain resulting from stress fractures may go unnoticed at first, however it may start to worsen over time.

Risk Factors

  • Gender – They are more commonly found in women compared to men.
  • Foot Problems – People with unusual arches in their feet are more likely to develop stress fractures.
  • Certain Sports – Dancers, gymnasts, tennis players, runners, and basketball players are more likely to develop stress fractures.
  • Lack of Nutrients – A lack of vitamin D and calcium may weaken the bones and make you more prone to stress fractures
  • Weak Bones – Osteoporosis can weaken the bones therefore resulting in stress fractures

Stress fractures do not always heal properly, so it is important that you seek help from a podiatrist if you suspect you may have one. Ignoring your stress fracture may cause it to worsen, and you may develop chronic pain as well as additional fractures.
